What is the status of MetroNet Fiber Internet in Ankeny, IA?
The Ankeny City Council voted April 5th, 2021 to approve an agreement with Indiana-based company MetroNet to install fiber-optic internet. The network will provide up to 1 gigabit per second of high-speed internet, phone and TV to 90% of homes and businesses. Officials say no taxpayer dollars will be used to fund the $15 million project, which MetroNet is calling a capital investment.
The plan is to install high-speed fiber access to about 90% of the city of Ankeny. The new service will be available incrementally, but the project should all be completed by fall of 2022. Construction could begin in May of 2021, but it could be completed in the fall of next year, city manager David Jones says. It will be “disruptive,” but “the end result will be another choice,” he says.
How much will MetroNet cost per month?
Fiber services are expanding to more regions across the United States, making it easier to access fiber internet. A fiber optic network is built using glass fibers instead of copper wired to deliver internet and TV faster and farther than any service you’ve had before. That all sounds expensive, but the technology is becoming more affordable.
As the demand for faster internet has exploded over the last few years, one of the main factors driving this rapid expansion has been the affordability of fiber optic construction as a result.
Ankeny fiber internet service prices are not published yet since it is not fully installed and are subject to change by the time the network is complete. However, the introductory rates available usually begin from $49.95 and go up from there, depending on the amount of speed you need. Other similar cities range from $49.95 to $89.95 per month for the fastest available packages.
